One Market, in Detail

US Market

Same principle as the Australian block above: real numbers for one specific market, kept out of the global manual so the mechanics in Mod 02+ stay usable everywhere. This one comes from an actual survey rather than aggregated job‑board scraping, which is worth knowing before you weight it.

US 01

SE Career Ladder & Pay — United States

From a direct survey of 400+ practising SEs, not job‑board scraping — which is a materially different, generally more trustworthy kind of source than most of what's cited in Mod 02+'s "why sources disagree" table.

Read this before the numbersAll figures are On‑Target Earnings (base + variable), US‑only, sourced by the surveying vendor from Glassdoor and stated as for reference rather than a guarantee. The vendor that ran this survey sells demo‑automation software — reason enough to sanity‑check the framing in its other findings (the sheet after this one), though the salary bands themselves are a straightforward survey result with no obvious incentive to distort.

What the title actually is, and where it sits

Nineteen different job titles surfaced in the same survey population — evidence for the title‑inflation warning in Mod 02+ being a real phenomenon, not a manual's cynicism. The top four: Solutions Engineer (39%), Sales Engineer (19%), Solutions Consultant (18%), Solutions Architect (9%) — Presales Consultant, Solution Advisor and Presales Engineer split most of the rest. Reporting line is equally consolidated: 74% sit inside Sales, with Presales/Solutions, Product and Customer Success each taking a small slice. If a US role's title or reporting line looks unusual against these numbers, ask why in the interview rather than assuming it's a red flag — sometimes it just means the org chart hasn't caught up to how the role is actually used.

What actually moves you up a band

The survey's own advancement guidance tightens at each level in a consistent direction: fill technical gaps and find a mentor at Associate; build enablement material and start owning client relationships as SE; handle escalations and drive visible improvements as Senior; take on leadership of other SEs and multi‑product complexity at Principal; own team‑level retention and pipeline metrics, not just your own deals, at Director; and set GTM strategy with the C‑suite at VP. It's the same shape as the Level 0–2 structure this whole manual is built around, independently arrived at by a different survey.
