MOD 07
Sales Methodologies in Play
Qualification frameworks tell you what to find out. Methodologies tell you how to behave in the room.
| Methodology | Core idea | Pre‑sales' role in it |
|---|---|---|
| SPIN Selling | Question sequence: Situation → Problem → Implication → Need‑payoff, moving the buyer to articulate their own urgency | Foundational questioning discipline underneath every discovery call — see Mod 08 |
| Challenger Sale | Teach, Tailor, Take Control — lead with an insight the customer didn't have, tailored to their specific situation, and confidently direct the process rather than order‑take | Pre‑sales is usually the one who can teach — you're the credible source of a non‑obvious technical or industry insight that reframes the problem |
| Solution / Value Selling | Sell the resolution of a business pain (the "pain chain") rather than the product's feature list | Translating features into a pain‑chain narrative is a core pre‑sales skill — see Mod 09 |
| Command of the Message | Every person on the deal team — AE, SE, exec sponsor — tells the buying committee the exact same value narrative, in the same language, independently | Pre‑sales usually authors the technical half of that message and has to defend it consistently under technical cross‑examination |
| Gap Selling | Sell the gap between current state and future state, quantified — not the product itself | The gap is precisely what technical + business discovery exists to size |
None of these are competing religions in practice — most mature sales organisations run a blend: SPIN‑style questioning inside a Challenger‑style insight‑led conversation, qualified with MEDDPICC, described consistently via Command of the Message. Know the vocabulary because you'll hear all of it in enablement training and job specs — the underlying discipline is the same one this whole manual teaches.
