Pre-Sales: Zero to Hero — Metrics That Matter
MOD 15

Metrics That Matter

How pre‑sales gets measured, and how to manage a workload that's inherently reactive.

MetricWhat it actually tells you
Win rate (pre‑sales involved)Overall effectiveness, but easily confounded by deal quality — pair with the next metric
Technical win rateOf deals where the technical evaluation was won, how many still closed — isolates pre‑sales' actual contribution from sales/commercial factors
POC‑to‑close ratioWhether POCs are being scoped well (Module 11) or handed out too freely
Time‑to‑first‑value in demos/POCsHow fast a buyer sees their own problem solved — strongly correlated with cycle velocity
Deal cycle time (pre‑sales stages)Where in the pipeline deals actually stall, so effort goes to the real bottleneck
Capacity / deals per SEThe metric that protects you — used to argue for headcount or to say no to over‑commitment

The capacity conversation is worth having proactively with a manager, not reactively during burnout: pre‑sales is one of the easiest roles in a company to silently overload, because saying yes to "just one more deal" has no visible cost until quality drops across all of them.
